I Have Good News and Bad News . . .
Many times I have heard real estate agents express frustration about how their
people are performing or actually . . . NOT performing. Have you every complained
about one of your staff members or your sales associates?
Well, here’s the good news. And the bad news. Because the answer is the same.
You are creating a culture either intentionally or unintentionally. Your culture
reflects your behaviors. And your behaviors are an extension of your values and
beliefs. Chances are that if you don’t feel you have time to create culture, then you
are creating a culture by default. The behaviors you are witnessing with your
people are either a reflection of your behavior or the result of you ignoring behavior
that you do not desire.
Either way—you win! or lose, depending on whether you would like to be a
conscious or unconscious leader.
Ok, I know what you are thinking. “I don’t act like that so why in the world would
my people be acting that way?”
The growth of your business is dependent on the level of self-awareness you
demonstrate. Let me share that again: the growth of your business is dependent
on the level of self-awareness you demonstrate. Yes, that statement is that
powerful! It means that as you can observe yourself, your ability to understand how
you are creating the world around you increases. This gives you more and more
perspective to make new decisions about how to cultivate the experience you desire
for yourself and your people.
So often, we are quick to judge others. We can instantly assess what is “wrong” with
them. We can instantly identify how they are missing the mark. We can instantly
see how they are failing.
What we struggle with is accurately assessing ourselves. We judge ourselves by our
intentions instead of evaluating the facts. For example, we label ourselves as people
who are “on time” yet we are often a few minutes late. We are quick to note though
when a team member is late.
As a conscious leader, you will begin to note that every decision and every action
you employ creates your culture. Your people are always taking cues. You are
creating culture every day.
The ultimate great news is that you can consciously decide how to cultivate
performance for your team. You can decide to live the culture you desire. And your
people will thrive!
The time you must invest in your culture is the time it takes to be conscious about
what you desire to create.
Great article. Good to understand for everyone.
